Dog Breeds And Personalities
I've been conducting my own little experiment lately. I have been noticing other dog owners out and about and trying to match the owners personality to that of their dog. Sometimes its easy, the young wannabe gangsta with the pitbull or Rottweiler, the old lady or socialite with the poodle or Yorkie in a purse, and the classic nuclear family with a smiling Golden Retriever. Some are a bit more complex, my friends and family with the pound adoption dogs who have wonderful temperments, the 90 lb. twentysomething girl that lived in my old neighborhood with a ginormous English Mastiff, and the fat guy with the Dalmation that I used to see at the dog park. Maybe there is no way to match peoples personalities with the type of dog they choose to own, or maybe a good dog is just a good dog regardless of their breed. As a Jack Russell devotee I tried to find well known owners of the breed to see if I had anything in common with them, it turns out the Prince of Wales owns a couple, lets see I didn't leave my hot wife for an old bag, I'm not a billionaire or the future heir to the throne, but I am into organic farming and sustainable agriculture, Hmm, then I find out Mariah Carey also owns a Jack, never mind.

Yeah, it's fun to match people with their dogs. My old yellow Lab is a lot like me and our little cockapoo Tess is a princess like my wife.
So, have you had any problems with your Jack Russell? I've heard they're very bright but can also totally destroy a house or apartment if they get bored...
No mine is actually very well behaved and has never destroyed anything, occasionally she will figure some way out to steal food if I leave it on my kitchen counter, but thyats about it. She is now 8 years old and except if she sees a cat or other small animal she is great. Woe unto any raccoon, rabbit, possum, or slow cat that enters my yard though, she is still quite the hunter.
I'm a combination of both my dogs. I can be strong and confrontative, like my French bulldog, when faced with bad Republicans (i.e confronting Mark Kennedy, and the right-wing radio folks at the State Fair.)
And, like my pug, I'm all about the love.
Physically, I resemble my dogs body types - short, strong & semi-stocky.
I like Jack Russells, Elvez. My cousin has a three-year-old Jack Russell that I absolutely adore. Buddy has more energy than my personality can handle, but I love visiting at my cousin’s house because Buddy will play with me for hours on end, and once in a while I feel like I need that! (Buddy ALWAYS feels like he needs it!) On my cat Baby Mackie's weblog, if you scroll down quite a ways, there is a photo of Buddy. I had to practically put him in a hammerlock to get him to hold still enough for the picture! He really is a wonderful little guy.
I'm not sure what kind of a dog would match my personality... I do know that one of my favorite dogs of all time is J.Marquis' dog Hank, and some of the cutest I have ever seen pictures of are Lizzy's Norman and Stella. What kinds of dogs are low-to-medium energy, easy to train, and make excellent companions?
Our family had a great mutt named George when I was a teenager, and he was one of the smartest dogs I've ever known, but almost totally untrainable. We tried Cocker Spaniels about 15 years ago, and I would swear they were about the most retarded animals I have ever encountered, next to the one we tried about 10 years ago, Ethyl - a cross between a Bassett and a Border Collie(!). She had the dumb of the Bassett and the hyper of the Border Collie. We found another home for her, and her new owners have been great to her, although they did have to have her de-barked for their own sanity.
My wife and I have always thought a medium-sized dog would be nice to have, maybe a larger one if we felt like we had the energy for it. If nothing else, being dog owners would provide us with necessary exercise if we were out on walks a couple of times a day!
I'm about an 80% cat person. I find that dogs demand more attention, and that cats tend to be lower-maintenance pets. That isn't to say I dislike dogs, though.
I agree with you on Cockers Snave, they have had all of the intelligence bred out of them, I have to say that for medium sized dogs that aren't too high maintenance and are intelligent Beagles are a great choice. They are very intelligent and don't require excessive excercise, they are great around kids and they really turn into lapdogs as they age. The only drawback is the need to be bathed fairly regularly like all members of the hound family.
I've never had a bit of trouble from Cocker Spaniels, bright intelligent, fast learners and L O Y A L (to one person).
I usually suspect the owner when there's a problem with a dog - I never blame a breed.
Hehehe! Well, 1138, I guess that makes ME the 'tard! 8-)>
